British sports car firm Aston Martin is teaming up with Milton Keynes-based Red Bull Racing to build the world's fastest car.
The new machine will arrive sometime in 2018 and will be developed with full access to Red Bull’s F1 technology. It will be engineered by Aston's Special Operations unit.
The news comes soon after Aston revealed that it will be re-entering F1 racing next season, also in partnership with Red Bull Racing.
Carrying the working title AM-RB001, only 100 examples of the super car will be built. It is likely that the order book for the car will fill up long before production actually begins, despite the expected price tag of £1.8m-plus.
Such is the pedigree of both Aston Martin and Red Bull, it is likely that the cars would be pre-ordered even if customers only had the concept image to go by – which doesn’t reveal very much at all.
The proposed car will have to surpass the likes of the Bugatti Veyron, the SSC Ultimate Aero and the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo.
Automotive journalists have questioned how such a car will ever reach fruition. The task is huge: to build a car that is comfortable enough for road use, while delivering F1-level performance.
The announcement comes just weeks after Aston revealed its all-new GT, the DB11.
Since Andy Palmer took over as CEO of the Gaydon-based sports car maker, it has undertaken a number of ambitious new projects, including development of the DB10, a one-off car for the most recent James Bond film, SPECTRE.
