Britain’s getting a lot of attention at the moment: there's the football fan thing of course, then there's that other thing that British people may or may not do, which we won't mention here.
But as the prospect of Hodgson’s 23 getting sent back across the Channel because of naughty fans puts about 83.9 % of us in a state of anxiety (not to mention the other thing), we might turn to one of our most luxurious car brands for a little national reassurance.
The reassurance that we can still build nice cars.
The new Bentley Mulsanne 'Extended Wheelbase' is as British as they come (and certainly not from anywhere else that may or may not be nearby), almost exclusively built in the firm’s Crewe factory. It is vast, opulently upholstered and set to occupy the space left by Rolls Royce's Phantom, which will be discontinued this year.
Automotive journalists have been gobsmacked by the build quality and attention to detail offered up by the new Bentley – all 2.7 tonnes of it.
The "Consummate" and "Extended Wheelbase" models are fitted with 6.75-litre V8s which produce 505bhp and can push the car to 60 from standstill in just 5.1 secs (not bad considering its weight). And if the 'entry level' models' top speed of 184mph isn’t enough, you might choose the 530bhp "Speed" version, which can hit 190mph (and do 0-60mph in a mere 4.8 seconds).
This is certainly an impressive advert for the British luxury goods sector. Perhaps we could send one over to pick our boys up if they win Euro '16?
The what ’16?
And who muttered that Bentley is owned by VW – a company based in Germany, which is in that large area we haven’t mentioned?
Not me, that's for sure.
