In relation to cars, 'entry-level' usually means affordable. But ‘affordable’ is not a word likely to be applied to the Rolls Royce Dawn, which will cost around £250,000 when it goes on sale next year.
Yet this will indeed be the most affordable convertible Rolls in decades. Taking its name from a model that first appeared in 1949, under the bonnet of the Dawn will be a 563bhp incarnation of the Wraith's 6.6-litre V12 engine.
Ride comfort will be paramount in the Dawn, with an ultra-smooth body surface and a 'French seamed' convertible roof – which will, says Rolls, match the quietness of the metal-topped Wraith.
Made from traditional fabric “for reasons of aesthetics and romance”, the folding roof will take just 22 seconds to fold away – at speeds of up to 31mph.
If the Dawn is anything like the Wraith, it will be able to hit 62mph in just 4.9 seconds and boast a top speed of around 155mph. On the downside, it will guzzle petrol rather quickly – to the tune of 19.9mpg.
Along with a GPS-assisted automatic gearbox which can read the road ahead, the Dawn will feature a 16-speaker sound system which will automatically adjust volume output based on ambient noise.
Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes said: “Our new Dawn promises a striking, seductive encounter like no other Rolls-Royce to date.
"A beautiful open-top motor car with a name that suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds, it will be the most social of super-luxury motor cars for those beautiful people who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s social hotspots.”
