For many motorcyclists with an interest in electric battery technologies, recent news that they would benefit from a grant to buy one was met with some optimism.
However, despite the introduction of some very promising electric motorcycles – such as Denmark's Fenris – the list of subsidised bikes is rather modest.
As far as many are concerned, the list was drawn up small - and it has stayed that way.
Eligible motorcycles
- BMW C evolution
- Scutum Silence S02
- Torrot Muvi
- Zero Motorcycles (all models)
Eligible mopeds
- Torrot Muvi City
Those seeking a step-through scooter can only choose between the BMW C-Evolution or a bike from Scutum or Torrot – both very small manufacturers.
Those seeking a full-blooded motorcycle can only pick a bike made by Zero – albeit any of the current range. Victory/Brammo had been on the scene with an exciting product, but it has since gone into liquidation.
Energica's electric concept motorcycle could be eligible for grant status, but rumours of them becoming available in the UK have been circulating for some time.
Describing their concept machine, Energica said it was “an evolution of styles and technologies already adopted in our models; bringing the most recent of the two-wheeled sports market trend”.
We have no idea what that means, but it does sound promising.
There is also hope that other electric bike makers will bring new products to the UK market soon.
But as yet, Zero has the market pretty much cornered. Industry commentators believe that won’t last long, however, since electric powertrains are generally considered to be the future of two-wheelers.
